Today, Freedom Park in Cairo’s Zamalek district witnessed the unveiling of a bust of former Angolan President Agostinho Neto, the first president of the Republic of Angola. The ceremony reflected the deep historical ties and growing relations between Egypt and Angola.
The unveiling took place in the presence of Ambassador Makinto Sebastião Lopes, the Angolan Ambassador to Egypt, along with representatives from various Egyptian institutions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the diplomatic corps. The event underscored the two countries’ appreciation for their shared history and the long-standing relationship between Cairo and Luanda.
The Angolan Ambassador was received by Major General Yasser Asaad, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Specialized Gardens Project. During the meeting, the importance of strengthening cooperation and communication between the two sides was emphasized.
The choice of Zamalek’s Freedom Park as the location for the statue of the former Angolan president stems from the park’s distinguished status. It houses a number of statues of historical figures and symbols from various countries, making it a space for learning about the history and personalities of nations around the world, particularly those who have influenced the course of their people’s lives.
The unveiling of the Agostinho Neto statue in Cairo represents a cultural and historical significance, reflecting the depth of Egyptian-Angolan relations, especially as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic ties between Egypt and Angola.
This event reflects the two countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation not only in the political and diplomatic spheres, but also in the cultural and artistic fields, thus contributing to strengthening the bonds between the Egyptian and Angolan peoples.
Egypt and Angola have recently taken new steps to enhance cultural and artistic cooperation, including the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries in the fields of culture and the arts, coinciding with the unveiling of the statue of former Angolan President Agostinho Neto in Cairo.
The unveiling of the statue affirms that Cairo remains a space open to celebrating African historical figures, thus strengthening the cultural dimension of Egypt’s relations with the countries of the continent and paving the way for greater cooperation and rapprochement between Egypt and Angola.
In the presence of African and Egyptian media, the statue of the President of Angola was unveiled, with the attendance of David Mário, Press Counselor at the Embassy of Angola in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
